Wedding Photographer at Villa Astor & Ravello, Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast keeps its two temperaments at its two ends. In Sorrento, at the coast's western gateway, Villa Astor sits directly on the water, a nineteenth-century villa restored to museum standard, its gardens running to the edge of the Bay of Naples. And high above the coast's heart, Ravello holds the clifftop register: historic villas whose terraces hang three hundred meters over the sea, crowned by Villa Cimbrone and its Terrazzo dell'Infinito, the statue-lined "Terrace of Infinity" that cinema keeps borrowing, most recently for Tenet.

I have worked at both ends of this coast, camera in hand: at Villa Astor, where I photographed editorial work in the same spirit as my Villa Balbiano celebration on Lake Como, and in Ravello, whose villas I know from the working side of a lens rather than the visitor's path. Villa Astor, Sorrento: the waterfront aristocrat

Astor's proposition is rare even by Amalfi standards: most of the coast looks at the sea from a height; Astor sits on it. The villa, once home to William Waldorf Astor, who filled it with antiquities and gave it his name, offers gardens at water level, interiors of genuine museum quality, and private sea access, which turns the classic Amalfi boat chapter into a doorstep affair.

From my editorial work there, the photographic read: the villa rewards the same grammar as the great Como houses, architecture treated as a character, the couple placed against water and stone with intention, and a timeline built on the terrace's own golden hour, when the light comes down the bay and the garden's parasol pines go to silhouette. In general, when one has the chance to work at Astor, the discovery is the intimacy: for all its grandeur, the estate is a single villa on the water, and celebrations here feel held rather than staged.

Practically, Sorrento is the coast's most logistical corner: closest to Naples, easiest transfers, and boat access to the whole coastline, which the Amalfi guide covers in full.

Ravello: the clifftop register

Ravello is the coast's aristocratic balcony: cooler, quieter, high above the crowds, with gardens that seem designed for ceremonies because, in part, they were designed for wonder. Villa Cimbrone is the summit of the register, its Terrace of Infinity lined with marble busts over a sheer drop to the sea, familiar from Tenet and a century of cinema before it, and its gardens deep enough that a celebration can keep finding new rooms of green. The town's other historic villas and hotels share the same currency: terraces, pergolas, and that particular Ravello light, which arrives filtered by altitude and leaves in a long golden fade over the water.

In general, when one works in Ravello, the craft lesson is vertical: the drama is in the drop, and the strongest frames place people small against the vastness, at the balustrade, under the statues, on the terrace edge, rather than filling the frame with faces the landscape wants to dwarf. It is scale-game photography, the same instinct my château work runs on, transposed to a cliff.

Choosing between them, honestly

Astor if the sea should be at your feet and the celebration held close: waterfront intimacy, museum interiors, Sorrento logistics. Ravello if the sea should be beneath you and the day should feel suspended: clifftop ceremony theater and the coast's most famous view.
