What I shot there, and what it taught me

The editorial celebration I photographed and filmed at Balbiano ran the estate's full register: preparations in the villa's monumental rooms, the gardens as ceremony theater, portraits on the private dock with the lake as an infinity backdrop, and the signature no other venue has matched since, daytime fireworks over the water, which sounds excessive until you stand under them and understand that on this lake, spectacle is simply the local dialect. Working knowledge the day left me with: the gardens' terraces stage group images at every scale without a single guest walking far; the dock is the portrait location, best in the last ninety minutes when the light comes down the lake rather than across it; the mountains steal the sun before the horizon does, so the timeline must be built on the ridgeline's sunset, not the almanac's; and the villa's interiors are dark, magnificent and demanding, exactly the conditions where fifteen years of documentary craft pay their rent.
