Planning a Destination Wedding in Paris, France

Paris does not need an introduction; it needs an interpreter. Everyone knows what the city looks like. What couples planning from abroad need to know is how it actually works: which hours the city gives you to yourselves, which venues deliver the fantasy without the tour groups in it, what requires a permit and what requires only nerve and a good alarm clock.

I photograph Paris all year: intimate weddings on its rooftops, including a Franco-Italian celebration at the Ciel de Paris with the Eiffel Tower as witness, engagement sessions at the Louvre at sunset, secret proposals staged to the minute, and elopements that begin in Montmartre at dawn. This guide is that experience, organized.

What kind of Paris wedding are you planning?

Paris hosts three distinct species of celebration, and confusing them is where planning goes wrong.

The intimate wedding, two to thirty guests: the city's true specialty. Historic salons, hôtel particulier courtyards, rooftop restaurants, river terraces. Paris at this scale is flexible, spectacular and surprisingly manageable.

The grand wedding, fifty guests and up: possible and glorious, at palace hotels like the Shangri-La or Le Meurice, at estates like Vaux-le-Vicomte within reach of the city, or in landmark venues like the Pavillon Cambon. It prices like the landmarks it borrows and books like them too.

The elopement, proposal or vow renewal: just you, the city, and a photographer who knows which bridge is empty at 6:40 am. This is the Paris I photograph most, and honestly, the Paris that photographs best.

The venues and settings I keep returning to

For ceremonies and receptions: the gardens of the Musée Rodin for classic elegance; the Hôtel Particulier Montmartre for hidden-garden romance in the city's most village-like quarter; palace hotels (Shangri-La, Le Meurice) when the Eiffel view must come with the suite; Vaux-le-Vicomte or Château de Méridon when you want château grandeur a short drive from your guests' hotels.

For portraits, my working map of the city: the Louvre courtyards and the Palais-Royal at sunrise, before the city claims them; the Bir-Hakeim and Debilly bridges for the Eiffel Tower without the Trocadéro crowds; Montmartre's staircases in the first hour of light, when the village still belongs to bakers; the Seine banks at blue hour, when the city switches its lights on and the water doubles them.

The rule underneath all of it: Paris belongs to early risers. Between 6:30 and 8:30 on a summer morning, you can have the most photographed city on earth almost to yourselves. I will bring the coffee.

The best season for a Paris wedding

Paris is a twelve-month city, which is rare and useful. May, June and September are the classic windows: long evenings, café terraces in full voice, gardens at their best. April and October trade a little certainty for a lot of atmosphere, blossom or bronze leaves, and gentler venue calendars. July and August are warmer and more touristic, but the early-morning strategy neutralizes the crowds, and August has a secret: Parisians leave, and the city exhales. Winter is the connoisseur's Paris: blue hour at 5:30 pm (which means night portraits at civilized hours), monuments lit like film sets, and the city's interiors, its salons, its palaces, doing what they were built for. Some of the most cinematic work I have made in Paris happened in coats.

One planning note specific to the city: Paris weather is genuinely changeable in every season. The plan B here is not a tent; it is the city itself, arcades, museums, covered passages, grand cafés. A photographer who knows them turns rain into a look rather than a problem.

The legal part

The pattern for all of France applies in Paris: civil marriage requires residency ties to the arrondissement, so international couples overwhelmingly sign legal papers at home and hold a symbolic or celebrant-led ceremony here with complete freedom of location and hour, a garden, a rooftop, a salon, a bridge at dawn.

Paris-specific logistics worth knowing instead: some locations require permits or private hire for ceremonies and even for tripod-and-crew photography (certain museums, gardens and landmark interiors), while discreet portrait sessions in public spaces are generally straightforward. I flag whatever your plan touches during preparation; it is routine, not scary.

What a Paris wedding costs

Paris is France's most expensive stage, with the Riviera as its only rival. Palace-hotel weddings price accordingly; intimate weddings and elopements, by contrast, can be startlingly reasonable, because the city's grandeur comes free with the streets. The budget lines specific to Paris: venue hire at landmark addresses, seasonal hotel costs for guests, and permits where your plan needs them. The line you can strike almost entirely: decor, because no centerpiece competes with the view of the Seine.

An honest structural tip: many of my couples split the difference, an intimate Paris ceremony and dinner, then a second celebration at a château in the Loire Valley or on the coast where the guest list and the budget both breathe. The TGV makes France small.

How the day flows in Paris

The rhythm I design for intimate Paris weddings: portraits first, at sunrise, when the city is yours, Montmartre, the Louvre, a bridge with the tower rising behind you; back for breakfast and a rest, because you started early and the day is long; ceremony late afternoon in your garden or salon; golden-hour portraits on a rooftop or the river; dinner as Paris lights itself, which remains the best free show in Europe; and if the night is warm, a last walk with a camera along the Seine, the pictures nobody planned and everybody frames.

For proposals, the choreography inverts: I am invisible first, present after the yes, and the session that follows is the engagement shoot you did not know you had booked.

Elopements and micro-weddings in Paris

For two people, Paris is arguably the easiest world-class elopement on earth: no hiking boots, no boat schedules, just a dawn alarm and a city that has been rehearsing its role for centuries. Pair it with a second chapter, lavender in Provence, a château in the Loire, and you have the two-day elopements that fill my favorite galleries.

Frequently asked questions

Can we really have the famous spots to ourselves? At sunrise, very nearly yes, even in summer. At sunset, expect company and choose angles wisely; this is precisely what a local photographer is for.

Do we need a planner for an intimate Paris wedding? For under twenty guests, a good venue, a celebrant and an experienced photographer can carry it. Above that, or for palace and landmark venues, a planner earns their fee within the first week.

Is winter really worth considering? For interiors, night lights and having the city calm: absolutely, and your budget will notice.
