Planning a Destination Wedding in the Seychelles

Some tropical destinations are interchangeable: swap the palm trees and nobody notices. The Seychelles are not those. Granite boulders the size of houses, sculpted smooth and pink, tumble into water so clear it reads as light rather than liquid; jungle runs straight down to sand; and the beaches, Anse Source d'Argent, Anse Lazio, Anse Georgette, are permanent residents of every "world's most beautiful" list for the boring reason that they earned it.

I photographed a wedding and honeymoon there, across Praslin and La Digue, turquoise water, granite gold at sunset, and, because the sea was that sea, underwater portraits of the newlyweds. This guide is that assignment turned into advice.

Why the Seychelles

Three honest reasons. First, the setting is genuinely unique among tropical destinations: those granite formations exist nowhere else, and they turn beach portraits from generic-paradise into unmistakably-Seychelles. Second, the scale suits intimacy: these are small islands with quiet coves, built for elopements, tiny weddings and honeymoon sessions rather than two-hundred-guest productions. Third, the sea itself is a location: warm, calm in season, and so clear that underwater photography moves from stunt to obvious choice, my Seychelles underwater frames remain among the most-loved images I have made anywhere.

The islands, and how to choose

Mahé: the main island, the airport, the capital, the widest hotel range and the dramatic southwest beaches (Anse Intendance, Petite Anse). The practical base, with real mountains behind the sand.

Praslin: one hop away, home of Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette, the honeymoon island par excellence, quieter than Mahé with the Vallée de Mai's prehistoric palms inland, a jungle counterpoint your gallery will thank you for.

La Digue: the postcard engine. Bicycles instead of cars, ox-cart lanes, and Anse Source d'Argent, the granite-and-shallow-water beach that made the Seychelles famous. For photography, La Digue is the main course; my own Seychelles work leaned on it heavily, and the island rewards staying overnight, because the day-trippers leave and the golden hour belongs to residents.

The structure that works: base on Praslin or La Digue for the wedding days, use Mahé for arrival and departure, and let the ferry rides be part of the story.

The seasons, honestly

The Seychelles sit outside the cyclone belt, a rare tropical blessing, and the year divides by trade winds rather than by safe-and-unsafe.

April, May, October and November: the calm between winds, my recommendation, glassy sea (best for underwater work), light winds, warm and clear. December to March: the northwest monsoon, warmer, more humid, brief tropical showers that rinse the air, seas mostly gentle. June to September: the southeast trades, cooler, drier, breezier, some beaches collect seaweed while others shine, an island-side question your planner or photographer answers date by date.

Daily rhythm truth from the field: this close to the equator, sunrise and sunset run fast and fierce, golden hour is shorter than in Europe and twilight is a rumor. Ceremonies belong in the last ninety minutes of light, and the underwater session belongs to late morning, when the sun stands high enough to fill the water with light shafts.

The legal part

The Seychelles are one of the world's easiest legal-wedding destinations: no residency requirement, modest paperwork submitted in advance, and civil ceremonies conducted on the beach itself, legally, barefoot, at the hour you choose within office practice. Hotels and local planners process it routinely. It is one of the few destinations where I tell couples: the legal route here is often simpler than the symbolic one at home.

What a Seychelles wedding costs

The Seychelles price as a luxury destination: flights are long-haul, resorts know their lagoon's worth, and imports set the cost of everything on a plate. The graceful path is structural: elope or marry tiny, let a resort or villa package carry ceremony logistics, and spend the guest-list savings on days, because here the wedding is inseparable from the honeymoon, and the trip is the budget's real line. Where not to save: the photography days plural (one island is a session; two islands are a gallery) and the underwater session, the single most Seychellois image you can bring home. Where to save: decor, against granite and that water, arranging anything feels like gilding.

How the days flow on the islands

The structure from my own Seychelles assignment: a ceremony day, preparations with the sea in the window, beach ceremony in the late golden hour, portraits among the granite as it turns rose-gold, dinner barefoot; and a session day, the piece too many couples skip, morning underwater portraits in a calm cove (a second dress that can swim, a mask-off breath rhythm we rehearse in the shallows, and then that floating, weightless imagery), an ox-cart-and-bicycle wander on La Digue, and a second sunset among the boulders in yesterday's dress. Two days, two completely different galleries, one trip.

Underwater truths, since I am asked constantly: yes in a real dress (chiffon and light fabrics bloom beautifully), no experience needed beyond comfort in water, and the best frames happen in the first meter below the surface, where the light is, no diving required.
