Planning a Destination Wedding in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic runs on a simple, devastating combination: white-sand beaches with leaning coconut palms on one side, and a green interior of mountains, rivers and jungle waterfalls on the other, all wrapped in Caribbean warmth, merengue, and a wedding-resort industry that has been perfecting the barefoot ceremony for decades. It is the Caribbean's most complete wedding island, and having photographed there extensively, beaches and waterfalls both, I can tell you its best galleries come from refusing to choose between the two.

The two-world island

Most couples arrive knowing the first world: Punta Cana's postcard, that particular white sand and turquoise gradient, palms bowing over the waterline, the beach ceremony at golden hour with the trade breeze in the veil. It is real, it is abundant, and I have shot a great deal of it: the pristine-beach imagery here rivals anything in the tropics.

Fewer couples know the second world, and it is where the Dominican gallery becomes unmistakable: the interior's jungle waterfalls, swimming holes in green light, rivers braiding through forest, the trash-the-dress or day-after session under falling water that no beach resort can stage. I have photographed a lot of this island's waterfalls, and the pairing is my standing Dominican recommendation: the beach for the ceremony's gold, the jungle for the adventure chapter, forty-five minutes to a couple of hours apart depending on your base. Two days, two planets, one island, and a gallery whose range surprises everyone back home.

(That beach-plus-jungle-waterfall combination, incidentally, is the exact terrain that draws couples to Bali; the Dominican delivers it a single ocean from Europe, without the twenty-hour flight.)

Where on the island

Punta Cana and Cap Cana (the east): the resort capital, Bávaro's long white miles, the deepest wedding infrastructure in the Caribbean, and the airport that makes guest logistics trivial. If a full wedding with traveling families is the plan, this is its engine room.

Las Terrenas and the Samaná peninsula (the northeast): the boutique register, French-Caribbean flavor (a genuine expat francophone community, a comfort for my French couples), wilder beaches like Playa Rincón, and El Limón waterfall in the hills behind, the beach-and-cascade pairing at its most compact. My favorite corner for elopements and small weddings.

The north coast (Puerto Plata, Cabarete): trade-wind beaches, a younger surf-town energy, and the Damajagua cascades inland, twenty-seven waterfalls of canyon-and-pool adventure for the boldest day-after sessions.

The interior (Jarabacoa, Constanza): the Dominican Alps, pine hills, rivers and the island's tallest falls, the full jungle counterpoint for couples basing a session trip on green rather than blue.

The seasons, honestly

December to April is the classic window: dry, breezy, 27 to 30 degrees, the Caribbean doing its brochure. May, June and November are the smart shoulders, greener, warmer, brief showers, softer prices, and the waterfalls at fuller voice. Late August to October is hurricane season's core: most days are still beautiful, but the risk is structural, and I advise flexible bookings or, better, other months for wedding dates; the odds are kind but the stakes are yours.

Daily light truths from the field, tropical edition: golden hour is short and punctual (ceremony in the last ninety minutes of light, always), midday sun is vertical and harsh on open sand (jungle sessions actually love midday, the canopy turns it into green-filtered softbox light, which is the scheduling secret of the two-world plan), and the east-facing beaches get their glow at sunrise, the empty-beach hour in a resort land where nobody wakes early, the Spanish clock's Caribbean cousin working in your favor.

Resort, villa or wild

The resort path: turnkey ceremonies, legal-paperwork handling, guest management at scale, and the honest trade-off of shared beaches and package aesthetics; the counter-move is choosing adults-only or lower-density properties and scheduling the couple session off-property, where the island's real faces live.

The wild path: elopements need none of the above, a beach at sunrise, a celebrant, a waterfall in the afternoon; the Dominican's vendor scene supports free-standing ceremonies far better than most tropical islands.

The legal part

The Dominican Republic hosts legal civil weddings for foreigners, resorts process them routinely, with translated, apostilled documents and some lead time, and symbolic ceremonies remain the majority choice for schedule freedom, the usual arithmetic: signatures at home, vows at the exact golden minute on the sand.

What a Dominican wedding costs

The Dominican is the accessible end of Caribbean pricing, meaningfully gentler than the French islands or Barbados for equivalent sand: resort packages compress costs to a known number, villas price by character, and the wild path is nearly venue-free. The structural lines: flights for the guest list (direct from Paris and most of Europe, a real advantage), the resort-versus-villa decision, and the adventure day's logistics, a driver-guide for the waterfall chapter is money that returns as the gallery's most distinctive images. Where to save: decor against that sand and that green, and any date in the May-June-November shoulders.

How the days flow

The two-world structure from my own Dominican work: a ceremony day, preparations with the sea in the window, beach ceremony at golden-minus-ninety, portraits as the sand turns rose and the palms go to silhouette, dinner barefoot with merengue finding everyone's hips eventually; and an adventure day, the multiplier, into the green with the second dress, a waterfall session in canopy light (falling water, laughter, the images that make it onto walls), a river pool, a jungle lunch, and back for a last sunset on the sand in yesterday's dress. Beach gold plus jungle green: no single-world tropical destination can hand you both galleries in one short trip, and the Dominican does it with a driver and a daypack.
